San Martino dall'Argine stands on an ancient natural bank of the river Oglio. The two important archaeological sites of Valle dell'Oglio and Valle Bugni testify that the area has been affected by pile-dwelling settlements since the Bronze Age. The Roman presence regards Valle and Motte-Coppine.
In the second half of the sixteenth century and in the first years of the seventeenth century, San Martino played the role of a small capital with a valuable urban fabric and was the residence of the Gonzagas.
In the first half of the 19th century, the fame of San Martino was linked to Ferrante Aporti, an eminent figure in the panorama of Mantuan culture during the Risorgimento. Priest, educator, philanthropist, Aporti founded here the first infant school of the rural villages as early as 1834".
