"WiFi Italia" is a project of the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy that aims to enable all citizens to connect, free of charge and easily via a dedicated App, to a free and widespread Wi-Fi network throughout the country.
The network development implementations were awarded to Infratel Italia on 23 January 2019 and are carried out by TIM: for small municipalities
under the Consip LAN convention and for municipalities with more than 2,000 inhabitants by tender.
The creation of the new free WiFi areas is made possible by the Ministry's 45-million-euro funding, extending
the availability of the initial 8 million euros funded.

The project has been extended to
healthcare facilities and
hospitals in which 5,000 free hotspots are planned
to be installed from March 2020.
With the WiFi Italia project, a nationwide network of free WiFi access points is created either
by integrating existing public networks or by providing every Italian municipality and hospital
with new WiFi points.
Citizens can gain free access to the network of existing and future WiFi access points throughout the country
by downloading the WiFi Italia App, which can be joined by other public bodies and institutions in addition to municipalities.
By downloading the App, you can access a single and simple
access system of the public networks already federated
with automatic connection to all network points wifi.italia.it
All municipalities can request the installation of new free WiFi points directly online, by registering on the web platform. New hotspots and existing municipal networks enter the App and become part of a widespread network throughout the country, in small villages as well as in the city. ANCI has also joined WiFi Italia to help promote the project and the methods of participation among its members.
By joining the WiFi Italia project, it will be possible for all public entities and infrastructures to enhance their digital services, enabling a simple and fast connection. A commitment that starts with the installation of more than 5,000 Access Points in public hospitals with the aim of helping people, professionals, and companies, to comply with the provisions to contain the spread of Coronavirus through digital devices too.
All networks have visibility on the website and App with a geolocated map. They are accessible to a large pool of already registered users and have secure data management. By downloading the App, the citizen's access to the network is automatic, without the need to authenticate again after the first registration.
