Municipality of Sant'Agata dei Goti

We publish the speech by Salvatore Riccio, Mayor of Sant’Agata dei Goti, in Campania, where the free hotspots have been activated and in addition to the Municipalities that have joined the WiFi Italia Project.

“According to the most accredited historical studies, the town stands on the site of the ancient Saticula, a Samnite city on the border of Campania, remembered in 343 BC. in the first Samnite war. The current name, Sant 'Agata de' Goti, dates back to the century. VI A.D., when the Goths, defeated in 553 A.D. in the battle of Vesuvius, they obtained to remain in their fortresses as subjects of the empire: a colony of Goths settled here. In 1066 it was taken over by the Normans and in 1230 it passed to Pope Gregory IX; The diocese of Sant 'Agata de' Goti, suffragan of the archdiocese of Benevento, dates back to very ancient times.

In 970 the bishopric was restored with the appointment as bishop of Madelfrido. There are numerous vestiges from the Roman era scattered throughout the town: sepulchral stones, inscriptions, columns. The necropolis, excavated at the end of the eighteenth century in the capital and in the localities Presta and San Pietro, nearby, have brought to light various bronzes and saticulan vases with red figures on a black background, now preserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples, in that of Benevento and some European countries. Ours is an ancient city, enchanting and rich in history! As an administration we have firmly joined the "Piazza WiFi Italia" initiative, created by Infratel Italia on behalf of the Mise, which has given us the great opportunity to make Sant'Agata dei Goti even more "Smart", more interactive and attractive, offering an efficient and fast connection to citizens and tourists in key points of the territory ".
