Municipality of Santa Marina Salina

We publish the speech by Domenico Arabia, Mayor of Santa Marina Salina, in Sicilia, where the free hotspots have been activated and in addition to the Municipalities that have joined the WiFi Italia Project.

“The municipality of Santa Marina Salina is located in the eastern part of the island of Salina, on the slopes of Monte Fossa delle Felci, the highest point of all the Aeolian islands, and of Monte Rivi. It covers the territory that goes from the top of the mountains to the sea. It is a dense area of vegetation, composed of eucalyptus, red eucalyptus, acacias, alders, elms, pines, holm oaks, chestnuts, ferns.

Archaeological findings testify that the island of Salina was inhabited since the fifth millennium BC. At the third millennium BC it dates back to the colonization of the island by people of Greek descent, probably the Aeolians. Other findings testify to the human presence in the territory of Santa Marina Salina in the 15th century BC. From the 6th century BC, when Lipari and consequently Salina were populated by people of Doric lineage, which made Santa Marina Salina the main center of the island. In the following centuries, Greeks, Romans and Byzantines followed one another, until the conquest of the Arabs in 840. In the 12th century the island was then populated by refugees from Amalfi, who landed in Malfa. In recent times, in 1867 the island of Salina, being the only one of the Aeolian Islands (in addition to Lipari) to be densely populated, was ordered to be an autonomous municipality, breaking away from that of Lipari, which remained on the other six islands. Thus the municipality of Salina was created. Since 1909 the original Municipality of Salina has been tripartite into the current three municipalities: Malfa, Leni and Santa Marina Salina
