Municipality of Barrea

We publish the speech by Andrea Scarnecchia, Mayor of Barrea, in Abruzzo, where the free hotspots have been activated and in addition to the Municipalities that have joined the WiFi Italy Project.

"The etymology of the name Barrea refers to the Latin" Vallis Regia "(Valley of the King), while the name Barreiam recalls a pre-Latin base," barr ", which could mean" ravine "," cliff ".
The area where the village resides is believed to have been frequented already in prehistoric times, as evidenced by the findings of some necropolises dating back to the period from the sevent h century to the fourth century BC. The village with its present structure was created around the year 1000 by some monks, with the aim of protecting the populations of the valley in safer settlements. We have firmly joined the Infratel "Piazza Wifi Italia Project" because thanks to the fast connection we can offer an extra service to citizens
and tourists, who can enjoy our landscapes made of mountains, expanses of beech woods and crystal clear waterways.
The highest peak, that of Mount Greco, reaches 2249 meters above sea level. Hiking enthusiasts can choose, from the town, from a dense network of trails that lead to the main attractions of the area, including: Lake Vivo, Lake Pantaniello, Lake Barrea, and the Resuni refuge.
The historic center is very suggestive, which still preserves intact the traces of an ancient past in which it was used as a fortification for
defensive purposes "
