Yesterday, the municipal administration of Policoro, in Basilicata, announced the activation of the hotspots that allow citizens, by downloading the dedicated app, to access the Internet for free and easily through the public wireless infrastructure. During the press conference, Mirella Liuzzi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economic Development, Carlo Sibilia, Undersecretary of the Ministry of the Interior, Marco Bellezza, Chief Executive Officer of Infratel Italia, the Mayor of Policoro, Enrico Mascia, who illustrated the reasons for the convinced adherence to the project. Commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Development and implemented by Infratel Italia, the initiative counts the registration of over 3,100 municipalities in the peninsula. The Mayor of Policoro, Mascia, opened the conference: "We have joined this ambitious project
which is already a reality that connects us with this large square that is Italia, and Europe, in the direction of the smart city, with the objective of bringing services and resources to citizens ”.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry for Economic Development, Mirella Liuzzi, in her speech underlined that: “Initiatives like this one in Piazza WiFi Italia represent a tool for social inclusion, especially for small towns and contribute to bridging the digital divide. Bringing greater connectivity and with it efficient services for citizens and SMEs means generating virtuous growth circles dictated by digital transformation”.
Infratel Italias CEO, Marco Bellezza, reiterated: "This is one of the priority projects for Infratel Italia, together with the Ultra Broadband plan. These months have shown that connectivity is a widespread need and an exercise of rights. Since February we have activated 570 municipalities, the target is 1000 by 2020, these are challenging projects but we are committed to accelerating"
According to the Undersecretary of the Ministry of the Interior, Carlo Sibilia: "Piazza WiFi Italia is a project that affects all citizens, Covid has accelerated the processes that were in progress. Connectivity and projects like this are opportunities for growth and security for the country".
